PRAISE CAFÉ FEATURE SPOTLIGHT BOB MAROVICH – GOSPEL HISTORIAN, AUTHOR & PRESERVER OF SACRED SOUND

Robert M. Marovich—known and respected across the gospel world as Bob Marovich—is one of the leading historians and archivists of gospel music today. His life’s work has been devoted to documenting, preserving, and celebrating the sacred sounds that have shaped generations of worship, culture, and community.
As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gospel Music, Bob continues to chronicle both classic and contemporary gospel with exceptional depth, care, and historical clarity. He is also the host of “Gospel Memories” on Chicago’s WLUW-FM, a beloved weekly program that honors the legacy of spirituals, jubilee groups, and the pioneering voices that built the foundation of gospel music as we know it.
Bob’s groundbreaking scholarship has elevated him to national recognition. His first book, A City Called Heaven: Chicago and the Birth of Gospel Music (University of Illinois Press), was named one of the best nonfiction books of 2015 by the Chicago Book Review. His second major work—an in-depth chronicle of James Cleveland and the Angelic Choir’s landmark album Peace Be Still—was released in 2021 to widespread acclaim.
In addition to his books, Bob’s contributions appear in an impressive list of publications, including the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Living Blues, Zocalo Public Square, and the Wall Street Journal. His detailed album notes earned him two Grammy Award nominations in the Best Album Notes category, further demonstrating his mastery in gospel music research and presentation.
Bob's voice and expertise have also been showcased on screen. He appears in the award-winning documentary How We Got Over and has lent his insights to projects for the BBC, WXPN, and more. Most recently, he served as advisor and on-camera contributor for Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s acclaimed 2024 PBS documentary series GOSPEL.
His commitment to the preservation of African American sacred music has earned him some of the highest honors in the industry, including induction into the Gospel Industry Network Hall of Fame (2021), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prayze Factor Awards (2023), and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in St. Louis (2024).
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame (cum laude) with an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, Bob also serves on the board of the Institute for the Preservation of African American Music and Arts in Milwaukee. He works closely with Baylor University’s Black Gospel Archives, which has digitized his extensive collection of gospel recordings—ensuring the music he loves will be preserved for future generations.
Through his writing, broadcasting, preservation work, and unwavering dedication, Robert M. Marovich continues to amplify the voices, stories, and spiritual legacy of gospel music. Praise Café proudly honors his extraordinary impact on the culture and the Kingdom.
